This is an easy step by step tutorial on how to create Pretty WordPress Permalinks on Internet Information Services (IIS) WITHOUT using 404 redirects.

After many hours and hundreds of web searches later I managed to gather bits of info to finally get Pretty WordPress Permalinks to work perfectly on IIS without using IIS’ 404 redirects. As far as I know (from all the web searches), there is no other article on the web that describes the method I have used. So this is the first tutorial on the web that describes how to create Pretty WordPress Permalinks on Internet Information Services (IIS) WITHOUT using 404 redirects.

During the tutorial, when I refer to paths or files for example “index.php”, do not include the “” apostrophes when typing them in

Let’s get started.

1. 1. Ionic’s ISAPI Rewrite Filter is like mod_rewrite however it was made as an add-on for IIS. Essentially, this ISAPI Rewrite Filter makes your IIS work as if it has mod_rewrite.
      And the best thing about it is that its
      small, really cheap (free) and easy to use.
   2. Download Ionic’s ISAPI Rewrite Filter at http://www.codeplex.com/IIRF/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx. Download the file “IonicIsapiRewriter-1.2.12c-bin.zip”
   3. After downloading the compressed file, extract the files and look for “IsapiRewrite4.dll” and “IsapiRewrite4.ini”. These are the 2 important files for this tutorial. Highlight these files and copy them.
   4. Paste the files to a new appropriate folder, such as “ISAPI” within your “Inetpub” folder. I created a folder called “ISAPI” and within that another folder for the site name e.g. “c:\wwwroot\ISAPI\wordpress”. Later, if you want to use this filter for other sites you’ll need to put these files in a new separate folder. The appropriate folder must have permissions granted to the appropriate Windows principal
      (IUSR_hostname). N.B. Don’t create the folder in the web document tree. (it causes problems with detecting
      changes in the ini file).
   5. Open IIS go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Internet Information Services
   6. To use the ISAPI filter on your WordPress Web site, select the icon for that Web site, right-click the level (icon) that you selected and Click the
      Properties button.
   7. Click the ISAPI Filters tab.
   8. Click Add.
   9. Type a name for the ISAPI filter. Eg, “Ionic Rewriter”.
   10. Click Browse and select the ISAPI filter DLL that you copied in
       step 3.
   11. Click OK.
   12. Restart IIS service.
   1. Open the file “IsapiRewrite4.ini” in the new folder you created. This if the file we use to create the rewrite rules.
   2. Select all the text in this file and replace it with the following: RewriteRule ^/wordpress/(?!images)(?!wp-[^\?\/]*)([^\?]+)$ /wordpress/rewrite.php?$1

      This
      rule assumes that your wordpress web site is in a sub folder names “wordpress” e.g. “http://www.example.com/wordpress”. If your WordPress web site is in the root, remove both “wordpress/” from the rule.

   3. Save the file.
   1. In the Root of your WordPress web site create a new file named “rewrite.php”
   2. Open the file and paste the following code into it: <?php

      $_SERVER[’PATH_INFO’] = $_SERVER[’QUERY_STRING’];
      include(’index.php’);
      ?>

      This makes the PATH_INFO variable equal to the query string that has been created by the rewrite filter.

   3. Save the File and close.
   1. Log into your WordPress Admin section and update the Permalinks.
   2. You can now remove “/index.php” and use some like “/%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/”

MySQL

1. We now need to create the WordPress database in MySQL. If you have followed Part 1 and Part 2
   step by step you should see the “index.php” site on “http://localhost/”
   1. Open a browser and type in “http://localhost/” – you should a page that looks like the image below.
   2. We have to create a database in MySQL using the phpmyadmin tool. The problem is that WampServer is installed to run under Apache as a default. This means that when you click on “phpmyadmin” under tools you will probably get “The page cannot be found” error. So we have to do a quick work around this problem. If it does open the “phpmyadmin” you can move onto step 6.
   3. Open the folder that WampServer creates when you install it. That is “C:\wamp\”. Now go into the “apps” folder and copy the “phpmyadmin2.10.1″ folder. Now go back once and open the “www” folder. Now go to Edit -> Paste. So the “phpmyadmin2.10.1″ folder so now be inside “C:\wamp\www”.
   4. Rename the folder “phpmyadmin2.10.1″ to “phpmyadmin”
   5. Open your browser again and go to “http://localhost/”.
   6. Click on “phpmyadmin” under tools.
   7. In the “Create new database” field type in “wordpress” and click create.
   8. After the database has been created click on “Server: localhost” at the top of the page.
   9. Click on “Privileges” 4th from the bottom in the list.
   10. Click Add and enter “index.php”
   11. Now click “Add a new User”.
   12. In the “Username” field type in “wordpress” or whatever username you would like to use.
   13. Under “Host” drop the the drop menu and select “Local”.
   14. Type in a Password in the “Password” field and confirm it in the “Re-type” field.
   15. Skip “Database for user” section. Default is “None”.
   16. Next to “Global privileges” click on “Check All”
   17. Scroll down to the bottom and click “Go”.
   18. Now that you have created the WordPress database in MySQL we can move onto setting up WordPress.

2. WordPress Setup

   We are almost there and WordPress setup is the easiest part.

   1. Open the WordPress zip file that you downloaded from the WordPress web site.
   2. Copy the folder “WordPress” and paste into the WampServer default www folder – “C:\wamp\www”
   3. After coping is done open the “WordPress” folder and look for the file “wp-config-sample.php”.
   4. Rename it to “wp-config.php” and open it with a text editor. You can even use Notepad.
   5. You only have to make 3 changes
      1. Replace “putnyourdbnamehere” with “wordpress”
      2. Replace “usernamehere” with “wordpress” or your chosen username
      3. Replace “yourpasswordhere” with your chosen password.
   6. Save the file and close it.
   7. Open your browser and go to “http://localhost/wordpress”.
   8. You should see the “WordPress Welcome” screen.
   9. Just fill in your details and click Install WordPress.
   10. Write down your password and Click Log in. If you can change your password in the Admin section.
   11. That’s It, You’re Done !!! You have successfully Installed WordPress on Windows Under IIS.

This is Part 2 of an easy step by step tutorial on how to install WordPress on a Windows Platform and run it under Internet Information Services (IIS).

Configuring IIS Settings

1. We now need to change some settings in IIS.
   1. Open IIS go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Internet Information Services
   2. Under web sites select you default or localhost site. Right click then -> properties.
   3. Click the Home Directory Tab and change the Local Path to “C:\wamp\www” (This is the default “localhost” path when you install WampServer)
   4. Then click Configuration and then click Add under Application Mappings
   5. In the executable -> Browse for the “php5isapi.dll” file in the php folder.
   6. The extension type “.php”
   7. Choose All Verbs
   8. Check Script Engine and Check That the file exists.
   9. Ok, Ok, back to site Properties and click on Documents.
   10. Click Add and enter “index.php”
   11. OK, OK back to the IIS window.
   12. Right Click Web Service Extension and Choose Add New….
       1. (It appears that IIS in Windows XP does not have an Web Service Extensions or if it does, you won’t be able to access it….. however i skipped this step in XP and it still works. But you have to do it with Windows Server.)
   13. Extension name enter “PHP”
   14. Click Add next to required files and select the “php5isapi.dll” file in the php folder again.
   15. Check “Set extension status to Allowed” and click OK.
       

       Environment Variables

2. Environment Variables – You have to add the path to your php folder in Environment Variables.
   1. Go to Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Environment Variables
   2. Under “System variables” look for “Path”
   3. Highlight it and click Edit.
   4. You need to add the path to your php folder to the end on the Variable Value. Use a semi-colon “;” then the path. Click OK.
   5. Now click New to Add a New system Variable. For the Variable name use “PHPRC” and value put the path again.
   6. Ok, Ok, Ok all the way out.
   7. For the Environment Variables to take effect we have to reboot.

This is an easy step by step tutorial on how to install WordPress on a Windows Platform and run it under Internet Information Services (IIS).

The first time I tried to get WordPress running on Windows and IIS, I gave up after a few hours and installed Apache just because I wanted to see how it works. The problem was that all my other sites were already setup and running in IIS. I was even considering using another IP address so I could use port 80 for apache and the other IP port 80 for IIS.

I decided to give it one last shot. I stopped the Apache service and started IIS services. And just like that WordPress was working under IIS. I was convinced that it was still running on Apache but after testing the port it said it was being used by IIS. I had indirectly fixed the IIS problem in the process of installing apache. I did this by installing WampServer.

Before writing this tutorial I went through the step by step process on another machine and was up and running without a problem. I have insert a few screen captures – just click to enlarge them. Also when I refer to paths or files for example “index.php” do not include the “” apostrophes when typing them in.

Let’s get started on Part 1.

BACKUP

1. Always a good idea to do a backup before installing new software.
   

   Download WordPress

2. I assume you have already downloaded WordPress. If not, go to http://wordpress.org. At the time of writing this tutorial I used WordPress Version 2.3.2.
   

   Download WampServer

3. Download Wampserver – Go to http://www.wampserver.com. WampServer will install PHP, MySQL and Apache all at once. It will also configure the php.ini file for MySQL and WordPress. So you won’t need to change anything in “php.ini”.
   

   Install WampServer.

4. Install WampServer.
   1. Run the WampServer file you have just downloaded and go through the install wizard. It’s a pretty basic install wizard
   2. After installation there should be a icon in the system tray. (I looks like a rev counter). If its not there double click the WampServer icon on your desktop.
   3. Click the icon in the system tray then click -> MySQL -> Service -> Install the Service. (You might get an error after doing this…. don’t worry it will work after we reboot later.)
   4. Again -> Click the icon in the system tray then click -> MySQL -> Service -> Start/Resume Service.
   5. Again -> Click the icon in the system tray then click -> Put Online (You might get an error after doing this…. don’t worry it will work after we reboot later.)
